Air freight is useful when a shipment’s timing, size or business consequence justifies the higher transport cost. The decision should compare the complete door-to-door plan with sea freight or another option, not just the scheduled flight time.
When air freight may make sense
- A production interruption: A replacement component may be worth moving by air if a delayed restart costs more than the freight difference.
- A fixed event or receiving window: Samples, exhibition equipment or project parts may need a particular arrival date, subject to available capacity and customs preparation.
- High value relative to weight: Some compact goods justify the air cost, provided packaging, insurance and import requirements are addressed.
- A split shipment: Critical pieces may travel by air while the balance moves by sea. Match the documents and receiving plan to each leg.
Perishables, batteries, dangerous goods, medical or controlled products can have additional acceptance and regulatory conditions. Do not assume they can be booked on a standard air service.
Compare the full journey
Ask for collection, export handling, airline routing and acceptance, arrival handling, customs services, taxes if relevant, storage exposure and final delivery. Airlines can change schedules and capacity. Clearance and local handoffs add time after landing, so a flight booking alone is not a delivery guarantee.
Air freight is commonly rated by chargeable weight, using actual or volumetric weight under the applicable tariff. Send packed dimensions and gross weight for each piece. Oversized or unusually shaped units may require a separate acceptance check even when their calculated weight looks ordinary.
What to send for a useful air quote
- Origin and final delivery address, ready date and desired receiving window.
- Goods description and intended use, number of pieces, packed dimensions and gross weight.
- Value, commercial documents, special handling needs and any batteries or regulated components.
- Which collection, customs and delivery tasks are already arranged, and the agreed trade terms if applicable.
Questions before booking
Is air freight always the fastest door-to-door option?
Not necessarily. Origin readiness, flight space, customs, terminal release and last-mile access can determine the result. Compare realistic total schedules.
Will tracking show every handling step?
Tracking detail depends on the carrier and service. Agree which milestones your forwarder will communicate and who responds to an exception.
Does the air rate include Israeli arrival charges?
Ask for a written scope. Destination handling, customs services, taxes and delivery may be separate from the airline rate.
