Air freight can be useful when the shipment deadline, cargo value or supply interruption makes transit time important. The decision should be based on the complete shipment, not a headline freight rate. Capacity, acceptance, connection points and local handling must be confirmed for the actual cargo and date.
Prepare a brief that a forwarder can price
Send the origin and destination, ready date, goods description, package count, external packed dimensions, gross weight, value and delivery requirements. Identify batteries, temperature needs, fragile items, dangerous-goods indicators, non-stackable pieces or handling restrictions before requesting a rate. Measurements and product details that change after booking can change both acceptance and cost.
Compare the full route and responsibility
- Capacity and routing: Ask whether space is confirmed, which airport and connection points are proposed, and which dates remain estimates.
- Chargeable measurement: Air freight may be charged by actual or volume-based weight under the carrier’s rules. Request the calculation basis for the packed pieces.
- Origin and arrival services: Clarify collection, export documents, airport handling, customs coordination, terminal charges and final delivery separately.
- Cargo acceptance: Obtain carrier-specific confirmation where the goods or packing need special handling. A quotation is not an approval to ship restricted cargo.
Plan for a change in the schedule
Ask who will report a missed connection, revised flight or document issue, and who can approve a revised route or additional charge. Keep the importer or receiving party available for the arrival and customs steps. An aircraft’s arrival does not establish a customs release or delivery date.
Questions before booking
Is the quickest flight always the best option?
No. Compare the complete door-to-door plan, including collection, handling, customs and delivery, against the required date and cargo constraints.
Can I book before the final packed dimensions are known?
You can request an initial indication, but the carrier’s acceptance, chargeable weight and final price may change when the packed measurements are confirmed.
