Understanding the Challenges of Fine Art Shipping

Art gallery with paintings on display

Artwork needs a shipment plan built around the object and the purpose of the move. An exhibition loan, sale, return or temporary display can involve different documents, packing and receiving arrangements. These are the questions to settle before booking transport to or from Israel.

Document the work and the journey

Record the type of artwork, materials, external dimensions, weight, value and condition. Take clear photographs and identify any existing damage or fragile points. Share the collection and delivery locations, required arrival date and, for a loan or exhibition, the expected return plan.

Agree on packing and handling

Determine who will prepare the object, choose the packing and confirm final packed dimensions. A framed work, sculpture or installation may need different protection and handling. Ask who is responsible for collection, loading, transfers, storage, unpacking and delivery at the venue. Access constraints and lifting needs should be disclosed early; specialist work requires an agreed provider and scope.

Clarify documents and import arrangements

Explain whether the movement is a sale, loan, exhibition, repair or return. Identify the owner, sender, recipient and party responsible for import or export formalities. Documentation and any temporary admission or return procedure must be checked for the specific artwork and route before dispatch. Do not assume that one document or procedure applies to every work.

Discuss value and insurance separately

Share the declared value and ask what transport cover is available, from which point to which point, and under whose policy. Review packing conditions, deductibles and exclusions. A freight booking alone does not confirm insurance for the artwork.

Questions before an artwork shipment

Do I need a crate for every work?

No single packing choice fits every object. The materials, condition, dimensions, route and handling plan determine what should be discussed with the responsible packing specialist.

Can an exhibition piece return after the event?

Plan both directions at the outset. Share exhibition and return dates, ownership and documents so the appropriate import and return requirements can be checked.

Is the venue’s delivery included in an air or sea quotation?

Only if the written scope includes that leg and its handling requirements. Confirm delivery access, unloading, storage and unpacking separately.

Plan your artwork shipment

Review the fine art service and send Rani the work, route and dates. You can also start on WhatsApp with photos and the details available so far. Requirements and specialist arrangements are confirmed for each shipment.
