How Much is Import Tax in Israel?

There is no single import tax rate for every shipment to Israel. The amount depends on the product’s classification, the applicable customs duty and purchase tax, the customs value, and the import rules that apply to the goods. VAT may also be due. A useful estimate starts with a precise product description and the right official tool for the type of import.

Which taxes can apply to imports into Israel?

  • Customs duty: The rate depends on the tariff classification and applicable rules, including origin where relevant.
  • Purchase tax: This applies to certain classified goods.
  • VAT: Consider VAT as part of the import tax assessment. Check the rate in force at the time of import rather than relying on a dated example.

Taxes and the carrier’s or customs broker’s service charges are different cost items. Freight, insurance and other costs can also matter to customs valuation. An invoice price alone is not a complete tax calculation.

Does the shipping country determine customs origin?

No. The country the cargo ships from does not, by itself, establish where the goods originate for a trade agreement. A preferential duty claim depends on the applicable agreement, its rules of origin and the required supporting document. Ask the importer and customs broker to verify eligibility before using a preferential rate. The official customs tariff shows rates and conditions by classification, but its online display is an aid; the binding legal text and the shipment’s evidence govern the assessment.

How to estimate the amount before shipping

  1. Identify the goods accurately. Gather the product’s use, materials, specifications, quantity, price, origin, seller invoice and shipping terms.
  2. Determine the import type. Personal import for private use and commercial import have different tools and requirements.
  3. Check classification and conditions. For commercial goods, consult the Israel Tax Authority’s customs tariff and purchase tax tool. Classification affects rates and whether an approval, licence or standard is required. A licence is not automatically required for every commercial shipment.
  4. For a personal purchase, use the official personal import tax calculator. Its result relates to the product and information entered, and may not include carrier or handling fees.
  5. Review the estimate with a customs professional. Confirm the valuation, documents, applicable concessions if any, and charges before committing to a shipment.

What information should you send for a quote?

Send the commercial invoice or purchase link, detailed product description, country of origin, quantity, value and currency, packing details, transport mode and Incoterms if agreed. Tell us whether you are importing for personal use or resale. We can coordinate the shipment and the customs clearance steps with the relevant professional; the tax assessment follows the applicable customs rules.

Common questions

Is an import licence always needed?

No. Whether an approval, licence or standard applies depends on the product and its classification. Check the official tariff and the relevant authority’s conditions before dispatch.

Can I calculate VAT by applying a percentage to customs duty alone?

No. That shortcut does not establish the taxable import base. Confirm the customs value and the current calculation with a qualified customs broker or the Israel Tax Authority.

Does the personal import calculator cover business stock?

No. It is intended for personal imports. For commercial goods, start with the tariff classification and have the importer and customs broker review the full declaration.
