Smooth Air Freight Customs Clearance in Israel Guide

Air freight can shorten transit time, but arrival at an Israeli airport does not itself complete customs clearance. The importer, broker, carrier and delivery team need consistent shipment information and any product-specific approvals before release.

Prepare the air shipment before departure

  1. Confirm the importer and consignee. Make sure the air waybill, invoice and importer instructions identify the correct parties.
  2. Give a precise product description. Include model, material, use, quantity and value. The customs classification can affect duty, purchase tax, VAT and import conditions.
  3. Check product controls. Some goods need approvals or standards evidence. Consult the official customs tariff, the Free Import Order search tool and the relevant authority for the specific goods. Check the current requirement for the product before it is dispatched.
  4. Share documents early. The broker can flag mismatches and missing information before the flight lands.

Air freight clearance documents

  • Commercial invoice: seller, buyer, detailed description, value, currency and transaction terms.
  • Packing list: package count, contents, weights and dimensions.
  • Air waybill: transport and consignee details that agree with the shipment records.
  • Supporting evidence where applicable: origin documents, licences, approvals, specifications or other records requested for the product.

The document list is shipment-specific. A generic description such as “parts” may leave the broker without enough detail to check classification or a required approval.

What happens after arrival?

The carrier and ground handler make arrival information available. An authorized customs broker can submit the import declaration with the importer’s records. Customs and other competent authorities may review the documents, assess taxes, request more information or inspect the cargo. Once the necessary steps are completed and the goods are released, arrange pickup and final delivery.

Allow for airport handling, customs services, applicable taxes and local delivery in the total budget. Clearance time depends on the actual goods, documents, approvals and any inspection; a booked flight does not guarantee same-day release.

Questions to settle with your forwarder

  • Who is the importer of record, and who will appoint the customs broker?
  • Are the invoice, packing list and air waybill consistent?
  • Which approvals must be available before departure?
  • Who will pay airport charges and arrange delivery after release?
